I'm Missing Out On Spring!
I just realized that summer is fast approaching, and I have missed much of spring! Aside from taking pictures of the flowers and foliage in the neighboring botanical gardens, I haven't been doing much, really.
Well I guess there are several reasons as to why it came to be this way. First there is work. Then we have the pollen season which, at its worst, kept me indoors for days.
Then there is this small issue called THE WAITING! Close to three full months waiting for my camera preorders. And the waiting time was spent reading about these cameras on the internet, and missing them even more!
It irritates me that I can never seem to get my hands on any of these new cameras. Norway never seems to be able to get any from either Canon or Nikon, while other countries seem to be having them in stock all the time, especially Asia. At least I have, up to now, prevented myself from ordering online from some unknown store in Hong Kong. It may be cheaper, but I will be losing out on the warranty. Moreover my insurance company will probably not cover it, or they might but at a higher premium.
I am coming ever so close to the point where I can already afford one of these! This is the Canon EOS 1D Mark IV, Canon's most advanced, pro-grade DSLR before the announcement of the EOS 1D-X late last year. This thing is a beast! And the complete opposite of the Micro Four-Thirds cameras I considered purchasing.
I had considered purchasing a pro-grade DSLR before. My back will probably hate me for it, but it does have advantages. These cameras are almost completely weatherproof, handle better, and have more durable shutters, making them last for years and years. The 1D Mark IV is not full frame, but it comes close with its APS-H sensor. Its AF system is almost as complex as that of the 5D Mark III, has almost comparable high ISO performance, and shoots a staggering 10 frames per second. The resolution is almost the same as the Pentax K-5, but the larger sensor outputs better image quality with less noise. All for just NOK 4000 more than the price of the (absent) 5D Mark III.
While this means I can say goodbye to stealthy street photography, I will probably have better luck taking this camera out for birding and macro photography. I am, however, a bit intimidated by its size.
I am giving myself a longer waiting period, until the end of May, since I know the new generation of DSLRs are worth it. But waiting even longer will be a waste of time. Life is too short and my patience is really running thin!
Tomorrow is another day and I continue to wait, hope, and check my inbox and mobile phone for "the message". And tomorrow, May 10, is Leica day: by this same time tomorrow night the press conference from Leica AG will be finished, and who knows what new goodies would have been unveiled? A Leica M10 perhaps? A new reason to save and wait some more? LOL.
